Chair's Welcome

Welcome to the website of the Department of Biological Sciences at Simon Fraser University.  Inside, you will find descriptions of our programs, our faculty's various research interests, and information for new Biology majors and prospective graduate students.  If you need further information, please contact me directly at breden@sfu.ca or 778-782-5647.

I would particularly like to welcome undergraduates looking to become Biology majors and students looking for graduate programs.  It is certainly a great time to be starting a biology career.  With new advances in DNA sequencing technology, it is possible to apply this type of information not only to human biology and biomedical research, but also to long-standing questions in all areas of biology: evolution, development, ecology and much more.  In addition, the pressing environmental challenges that we face call for rigorous training in many areas of biology, such as conservation biology, ecology, genetics and physiology, and many more.

Our Department has the resources to help you take advantage of these exciting changes in the world of Biology: strong programs in genomics, plant genetics, evolution, conservation biology, and behavioural ecology, among others. In addition, we have recently hired new professors in neurobiology, cell physiology, and biological control of pests.  Most importantly, a broad biology department such as ours can provide you with an environment that fosters collaboration between these disciplines, and it is these types of collaborative exchanges that foster the most exciting advances in all of science.  I invite you to use these pages to learn more about our Department and hope that you will join us in this great adventure.
